Weak as piss lager has its place if you are a reluctant drinker, complying to some social convention. You are on a stag do and others are getting stuck into their 17th pint of Leffe, but you proclaim to prefer the refreshing , crisp taste of a pint of a Carling. I made ice lollies out of Carling once. Not something I'd recommend. That was a particularly crap episode of Dragon’s Den, although I probably still would have made an investment offer.

I can't believe anyone would knowingly order a pint of Carling. Even in my Lager drinking days I always thought it was weak as piss. It's officially as weak a piss now, so that Molson Coors who brew it can pay less tax on it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41059610Stella are another that dropped the alcohol % a while back, it used to be 5% growing up, but is around 4% now. I do like that Stella Unfiltered stuff though, really cloudy, but out of a bottle, it`s a really nice tasting lager.

I keep away from anything brewed in Burton and labelled as European, currently enjoying Erdinger Weissbier Wheat Beer.

The influx of foreign players has improved the game here exponentially
That said, it would be interesting if at least one UK based club followed Bilbao’s cantera policy of only picking players from the local region. Cumbria isn’t big enough to support anything other than a nice little non league club, but maybe Leeds could do it with Greater Yorkshire or Swansea/Cardiff with all of Wales…

I keep away from anything brewed in Burton and labelled as European, currently enjoying Erdinger Weissbier Wheat Beer. Picked some of this up, for the first time, earlier this week. Lovely stuff, but a little stronger, and I couldn`t finish them all off ! Used to love some Tyskie, but Tesco have stopped doing the bottles. And didn`t mind the odd Heineken in a bottle, but that all seems to come from Poland now, as do a lot of Heinz sauces, for some reason.

Two bottles are enough, certainly not something to have a session on.

09sider - Getting the beer in from Tesco earlier, and saw there are now 3 varieties of that Erdinger stuff.
There`s a dark one called "Dunkel" which I almost got, but will save it for another day.

Got to be careful with the Belgian/German stuff, the Belgians push out 8-11% beers with a fruity addition in order to make it palatable, try one as a treat, but not wise to have half a dozen because it tastes nice. The Germans brew excellent beers/lagers but dunkels and alt ones are darker, and malty so best to buy one to see if it's to your liking, before buying a crate full. Try before you buy is the best option, Warsteiner and Bitburger were big favourites and very popular when I lived over there, and both available in Tesco. The most important thing to remember is, check it's brewed in Germany to their Reinheitsgebot, or German Beer Purity Law, which dates back to 1516 and states that beer can only be made from water, hops, and barley (yeast was added later). The locals out there try to convince you that you'll not get a hangover due the purity law and lack of additives, I tried countless times, but still ended up suffering, bloody Germans.

I developed a taste for Theakstons Old Peculiar, before Tesco stopped selling it ! So I do love the really dark beers.
2 of the Erdinger are 5.3%, but one of the 3 they stock, is only 5%. Really small writing on the back, but will check for that word on the back, to see if it complies to it.....hang on, I can check one of the empties now...
Can`t see that word on the bottle anywhere, but the ingredients don`t seem to have anything dodgy there.
Water, yeast, hops, and barley water and malt water. Has to be better than canned UK lagers !
Hangovers haven`t been so bad, as my tolerance for it all has been dropping in the last year or 2, and I can`t do as many !

I like Old Peculiar, have you tried the XB that Theakstons brew, not as heavy but really good.

We need a beer thread ! didn`t the old board used to have one, or am I thinking of bewers ?!
Think I`ve looked at that other Theakstons one, but prefer the stronger stuff.
Almost picked up some Hobgoblin a few times, but also like that Exmoor stuff, with the Stag on the label.
I did look at something in Tesco earlier, and thought about the brewed in Burton stuff, and put it back !
