Very good performance. Think he showed what we have been missing with him not playing, especially on the leadership and organisational side of things. Hopefully whatever has gone on is done and dusted and we can move forward with him back in the team.

We've missed him. He was my MOM last night. The game was made for him. Lots of high balls to deal with and an opposition unable to expose his lack of pace. I thought the wing backs had a better night too and they provided decent cover for him.

Agree. Great commanding performance last night. He was the big difference from our defence in recent games.
A perfect demonstration of the type of defender we should have signed in January.
Someone who can organise the players around him and lead from the back.
We now need to find a replacement with similar qualities who is younger and quicker.

As others have said, perfect game for him last night against big forwards and “lump it” tactics.
Not sure I’d still want to see him against a quick front 3 however (like Reading), that’s where he’s really been exposed this season.

He may be a bit slow, but the reality is that he is currently the best we have.

Personally responsible for 2 of the goals yesterday
Goal 1 - wasn’t close enough to his runner and not quick enough to recover
Goal 3 - pitifully weak and slow in allowing his man to get across him for a tap in
To those clamouring for his inclusion and questioning Simmonfor leaving him out, it was plain to all why he’s been nowhere near the team
Just watched the goals back on the itv highlights show. The way he points at Lavelle trying to blame him for the 1st is embarrassing tbh
Yes, at Burton he dealt with their aerial threat, but against the quicker and more skilful teams he is miles off from being anywhere good enough

Why was Lavelle so far out of position though? And what was he doing on the second goal?

Simpson blamed Mellish for the first goal.
In this case, I agree with him.
Lavelle deserves to be shouted at in any case.

Huntington has experience when on the pitch, and with pacy defenders about him he may be an asset, but on one occasion yesterday when fielding a pass he had a 3-4 metre start on one of the Reading forwards, but over a 14-15 metre run the Reading lad was well ahead of him, too slow, certainly for League 1 and even for League 2 next season.

Ironically hunts best games last season where when we played a 4.
We’d often start the game as a. 3 realise our midfield wasn’t strong enough and move to a 4. Our best run of form had Ellis RB - who’s a great one v one defender, hunts RCb, Feeney LCB and Armer Lb with Melish moving to Cm after 25 min.
At this point he was surrounded by competent players. The problem we’ve got is - we’ve replaced Feeney with Lavelle - whose slower, worse on the ball and poorer in the air; and Ellis hasn’t stayed fit coupled with Armer looking so low on confidence.
Personally I’d keep him for next season, but then again I’d of built my back 4 / around Hunts for this season.
I will be fair to Lavelle - Charlton fans say he did well in a 4 but not a 5 in which cause it’s shocking scouting.

Like last season, as well as this season, throws his hands up in the air and lambasts someone else for every goal he’s ever responsible for.

Mellish doesn't have any positional sense and confuses everyone else at the back. If he was any good as a defender they wouldn't keep moving him into midfield.
Hunts is our strongest defender in the air, but is too slow.
Lavelle has gradually lost confidence as the season has progressed. For me you need to be confident in your own ability to be a good captain. He is neither.
Barclay is slow and injury prone and has shown nothing to suggest that, even if fully fit, he would be good enough.
As others have said elsewhere... how bad must Grehan be if he can't even get a game?
Let's face it, none of the central defenders we have are good enough for this league and on that basis there is no point in keeping them for next season.

Which brings us back again to the unanswered question: Why did the management team not prioritise signing some (actually, quite a few) defenders in Jan?? Had they been watching a different team?
