The retained list can be summed up in 1 word, predictable. The out of contract players were always on their way. I had a sliver of hope Gibson would stay, but it wasn’t to be. I still think there is a player in Maguire, but he did nothing, so no complaints.
Same with the lack of made available. Haris has been available on a free transfer since 48 hours after he walked into the building. The only mystery is why the people who recruited him are still employed. Sam Lavelle, still here, slightly unexpected but does anyone care? Dismal second half of the season despite the goals.
Our Superabbottblue team predicted Emmanual would be offered a new contract, so it was immediately obvious he was on his way, even though it came direct from a player. Torn about Emmanuel, he is, imo, just about a L1 player so a shame to lose that but plagued with weird medical injuries and a dreaded wing back.
The real question is where do we go from here? You would expect we would start with the tactics. Then recruit a type ie young with development potential, into the empty spots. We seem to have no idea of tactics and no recruitment strategy. Which means anyone from my u19 milk wet rangers reserves to Frank’s geriatric ex Sunderland players and all points between are fair game. How 2 data analysts cope with that is anyone’s guess. There will be 500, xyz have released Smith and Jones posts on here. I genuinely believe they are useful for the club as, at least, they give the data team a seed to start from- so keep them coming. We were asked for recommendations in the past.
Whatever happens, please let us have some principles.
1. No one who can’t get from the car park into reception unassisted (Brentford boy).
2. No one with an illness or disease named after them (Emmanuel).
3. Anyone signed has been scouted in some form, a combination of eyes on and/or data. No random guessing (Kelly).
4. No one sent home from another club for poor attitude (Plange).
5. No one who is hated by the fans forum for lack of effort or abusing their own fans (McKirdy).
6. No strikers with an average of less than 3 goals a season over 3 years (Maguire).
7. No players who come for ‘bring your child’ reasons and never kick a ball (Grehan).
I also think we should aim to bring in 7 or 8 loanees. Most teams in L1, particularly those who went up, supplemented their side with good loanees. I know Simpson went on, you can only play 5 but there was no time when a minimum of 2 weren’t available because they were injured or he wouldn’t play them because he didn’t like them. Why pay a grand or 2 a week for players we can get for free? If they go back at Christmas, be ready and replace them. Obviously, you need to play them as well or they are bugger all use. Maybe another lesson learned.
If we have an above average budget the recruitment team needs to be average for us to be in and around the play offs. In turn they need the resources and guidance to do their jobs. Do we have any confidence they will achieve mediocre, lets see. The early signs are not good.
