I was at that cup tie when we lost 1-0 at Preston.
It was February 1964 so I must have been 7 years old. I still have the programme.
I can't really remember much about the football but I do remember I was standing with my mother at the front, behind the perimeter wall and a woman in a wheelchair (Preston supporter) on the pitch side of the wall complained about the noise I was making with my wooden rattle (which had been a Christmas present).
That prompted an argument with my mother (in retrospect out of character for her) who told her I was only a little boy and she should make allowances!
Funny how incidents like this stick in the long term memory far more than the actual football.
In those days I remember my dad always saying I only went for the half-time Bovril.

I started watching United in 1959 - not every match though. I remember Geoff Twentyman more by name than anything. I went to Norman Street School with his daughter but can't for the life of me remember her name.

My mother and her mate used to help run supporters club dances in late 40s / early 50s. I’m sure she said she went out with Geoff Twentyman!
He must have been some scout. He spotted Keegan, Phil Neale, Alan Hansen and Ian Rush!

I also knew Ronnie (Ginger) Thompson his Mam and Dad had the house next door to us on Raven Street. It was the one house in the street then that had a garage in the front then. He used it to weld summer job in the off season I guess. He and his family lived on Melbourne Rd and I remember going to a Boxing Day party at his house.
It was a great area to grow up as players used to appear on the park there and play in kick about games I recall Eric Welsh and Davey Wilson doing that.
