In the spirit of , ’10 players Carlisle might look to sign in the summer’ articles, and to alleviate the mind numbing boredom of another day in another hotel I put together a list of 10 defenders then added a few. I tried to pick players who were aged 20-24, good enough to play in the 4th and who would improve over the season, Add in I tried to exclude players who I didn’t think would come, we all want Baresi and Greaves but budget, location, paucity of talent in team mates/opponents means we are limited- so good players like Dodgson and Astley didn’t get in.
Exceptions are Stockdale whose value is in his off field. My Windsor Davies, look alike, colleague who supports Burton tells me Seddon is crap, but I left him in as we’ll need reserves. I also didn’t include any 32 year old championship standard players who will come to do coaching badges because they can do badges anywhere, they don’t need to come to us for that, imo.
Goalkeepers
Vitek ManU Accrington Recommended by Barry. Some half decent stats though seems to have struggled against better teams, 8 conceded against Bolton. Good bench warmer who could put pressure on Lewis.
David Stockdale 38 so little development opportunity. His strength is that he seems to be doing coaching badges and scouting certificates so he offers the opportunity of being more functional than just helping with keeper exercises before kick off. Not sure I want him playing regularly.
Wickens Ross C Fulham England international who has been given some game time in the Scottish Premier and acquitted himself well. He would probably come expecting to be number 1, maybe not such a bad thing
Left Backs
Denver Hume Grimsby described to me by a Grimsby fan as absolutely sensational on his day but a nutter. Wee Simmos man management skills have looked ropey but if he can tame this lad, he could be a top L1 player.
Seddon Oxford/Birmingham Not loved by Burton fans but gets decent stats. Quicker than Jack, could be good cover and fil in the pizza games when JA is resting. Also will find the 4th easier than the 3rd.
Mason Hancock Airdrie Needs to work on his defensive traits but at 21 has been a revelation for Airdrie. Pace, ability to beat a man and the ability to set up a pass.
Centre Backs
Rylan Towler Portsmouth Has done the whole development thing, about to break into the first team and Portsmouth get promoted, meaning he is not ready for the first team. Both strong and quick.
Joe Anderson Sunderland/Shrewsbury The third centre back at Shrews, played 24 games in a defence much better than ours. Time to be a regular starter, left footer so can cover left back as well.
Kofi Balmer Palace Port Vale The good one in the Palace u21 central defence. Started at vale where he made a dozen starts. Recalled at Christmas where he dropped down to Wimbledon and was a first team starter. Put in some good performances and now has a season of football under his belt.
Right Backs
Cammy Kerr Dundee Inverness More midfield minded player who has been in the Scottish Premiership. Would give some much needed strength to the right side. 27 years old
James Brown Raith The obligatory previous employee. Grown into a good 4th division standard player who is a million miles better than Ellis, and more dependable fitness wise than Emmanual and Back. Not going to pull up trees but will do a good job.
Adam Devine Motherwell Rangers Signed as cover by Motherwell he played about 8 games and did well. Playing at 4th division level when he is a year on in development, he should be a good performer. Another who is a country mile ahead of Ellis.
Jack Thomson Queens Park A centre back according to my expert, a midfielder according to one on here and QPs web site, a right midfielder according to his heat map. Seems well thought of, stats not bad though doesn’t score many, still young so development potential.
There are literally hundreds of others.
