1st May 2004 Carlisle 1-1 Cheltenham Relegation from the Football League. A bleak day, but we came back stronger. Can Simmo strike again lads?

Likely more difficult, then we went down with a positive vibe on the pitch and the squad partially reassembled for a challenge..The opposite can be said now.

Despite being relegated, that was a fairly strong squad that almost pulled of a miracle with decent runs of results in the second half of that season. I`d put money on that team beating the present one any day of the week.

We did bring in players that summer who went on to be fantastic players for us Westwood, Hawley, Lumsden, Livesey all good enough to play L1 football.

I remember that day so well. It's the hope that kills you. I think most people, including me, knew we were down by then but the game at Mansfield had just given us a glimmer of hope . . just maybe we could survive.
I was working for the club then and John Courtenay had said to me before the match that he wanted to do an interview for the website whatever the result and I had to find him after the game.
I found him in reception, loud, ebullient, rousing the troops. I reminded him of the interview and he told me to go up to B stand and he would up in 5 minutes.
It's always an odd atmosphere up in the stands after a match. An empty stadium, only seagulls shouting, rubbish blowing through the seats and terraces like tumbleweed, the fact we were down sitting heavy in my stomach. I waited for JC to arrive.
When he appeared he came to the top of the steps, waved me to stay where I was, he walked to the other side of the stand and sat down. His head down, I could faintly hear him curse and what sounded very like a sob.
I stayed where I was and waited, after a few minutes he got up and came to sit beside me, saying he had just needed a few minutes with the "mask off". He then gave a cracking interview, a few apologies but full of hope for the future. It's the future that counts now he said. Wise words!

I'm too young to have been around when he was in charge, but the stories about him always reflect such honesty and character, I think that's the best legacy you can leave. Thanks for sharing that.
