Can't say I'd ever checked, but I've always presumed there's some kind of system in place to prevent refs getting assigned to their hometown clubs or others they have any kind of affiliation with.
I'll say now that I'm on the fence as to whether it was a red, and I'm sure there will have been no conscious bias at play. But it's clear that Mr Woods has an affiliation to Wigan, and that surely should rule him out of officiating games involving the professional club from that town?
Incidentally, it's not his first game involving them. He was also the man in the middle of their 2-0 defeat against Reading last season.

That tackle happened right in front of the Wigan manager, who appealed for a throw in! Enough said.

The Martinez tackle during the Man Utd and Chelsea game was worse, in that he connected with the Chelsea players knee and foot, and it went to VAR who confirmed it was only a yellow card.
Basing our appeal on that, it should get overturned, but somehow I suspect not.

Last season us and Cheltenham were obviously in a relegation battle. IIRC, towards the end of the season, Cheltenham lost 0-1 at Bolton Wanderers. Cheltenham had a hotly disputed goal disallowed for offside which would have give them an equaliser and a point. The lino who flagged for offside was Joe Simpson who I think is Paul Simpsons son. So, could be a common theme throughout football that officials are selected randomly and without much background checking on affiliation.

@waterlogged
I don't think that's right, I thought he had two sons
Jake the coach and Dom the actor
Though there is certainly a resemblance in looks, maybe a cousin, nephew?
I think he has two brothers.
One is called Peter for sure.

On the Carlisle facebook page there is a lot more annoyance about this referee developing, somebody even has a picture of him in a Wigan newspaper getting awarded something, he'll be in it again next week

But the point is that Cheltenham would be as angry about it as we are about Saturday. Neither should have been approved for the games.

The thing is though, where do you stop? Agree that officials shouldn't officiate their own teams but on any given day there are permutations that effect just about every other club in the division. So if you haul off every official that has some connection with another club, will we have enough officials to play all the games?
Back in the day we had three young lads come over from Wallsend, one was Peter Beardsley, one was Neil McDonald, the other, whose name escapes me, didn't get to play in our first team and later went to be a ref in the lower Leagues, he reffed us a few times in the Conference year. He was chosen to ref the second leg of the semi-final v Aldershot but because some of the Aldershot fans found out and complained he was dropped. The sad thing was, that to go up to ref in the league he had to have reffed a semi-final or final in the conference and because of his age that was the last year he could do it, so he never got his chance to ref in the League.
He may have favoured us, he may have hated us for letting him go. I always thought it very harsh, like trusting him to be an official and be honest but only some of the time.

I remember the referee Mike Pike from Barrow was always or always seemed to be particularly against us. Not because he was from Barrow but in the match day programme it was always Mike Pike (Cumbria) and so oppostion fans and players would know that and maybe that was on his mind refereeing us. Or he could have just been a bit rubbish which is hugely likely.

I think there is only one ref that doesn't do us now, but could be wrong.

When the scottish referee Bobby Madden came into the EFL a couple of years ago, he wasn't allowed to referee us as he was based in Carlisle even though he had zero connection to the club, but that's understandable.

The Premier ref from Middlesbrough did a few podcasts talking about it. He's a boro fan. When you see the photos of the tackle, and we heard the 5 scream, you can understand why it was a red. Fair or unfair he's got to make a snap decision. Jeff winter could be the refs name.
