For the first time in my life I've bought a coffee table book, is this what middle age feels like? I was given the 1978 book, but was too young to have much of a network. The real peak for me was the Espana '82 collection. Spending break times with a huge pile of swaps at Yewdale School, scraping every penny possible together to buy packets of stickers from Burrows News Agents at Hutton Way and McQuillans over in Belle Vue. Spending seemingly endless summer days knocking round Sandsfield Park and adjoining areas on my bike searching out swaps. I got a shiny Naranjito in my first packet and was instantly hooked. The smell when you rip the packet open, the feeling of elation when all six stickers were silver and contained the England badge. It was the only time I ever completed a collection, I had to write in for one Chile player - but every other sticker was bought or swapped. Halcyon days. Not bad days at Brunton Park either... www.paninistore.com/shp_int_en/wc-1970-2022-panini-football-collection-lpbranfcpwc19702022-it.html

Friend of mine got this book for Christmas, and loves it, he was a collector of the albums back in the 80`s.
Wait ? A pack with ALL silver/foil ones in ?! Such a thing does not exist ?! Does it ?
Had a load of Panini albums back then, loads of football ones, that I`ve since lost, and also recall having the Jungle Book and Neverending Story ones, but no idea what happened to them either. Also had the Return of the Jedi one, but lost that, but have since grabbed 2 complete ones on ebay, for next to nothing.
"They`re up for sale, if you want them"
But opening those packets, was an amazing feeling back then, and getting one of those glorious foil badges in a pack, was a bonus as they looked so good, even the Scottish league ones, had me excited, St Mirren, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, even though, they were the little ones, that went at the back of the book, the football obsessed child in me, could not stop staring at them all.
Piglet - did you grow up in the UK ? If you did, do you, or anyone else here, remember these football cards, that were slightly bigger than the Panini stickers, but were clear plastic, and each one had the badge of a team on it ? They covered all the big teams in Europe and I think you used them to scratch something off, on another card within the pack ?
All the big name European teams were included, and I had a huge wedge of them, but long gone now. Managed to find them again on ebay, but they expired from my watchlist, and I`ve forgotten what they were called ! But what an amazing sight it was to open them up, and see those amazing badges on clear plastic, Bayern Munchen, FC Servette, Anderlecht, Hamburger SV etc.
Back on topic...
I only have 2 of the Panini albums still with me, World Cup ones, Mexico 86 & Italia 90. Both are incomplete, and I`ve looked at completing them, but the prices on ebay, can be a bit high, I`m quite a few short of the Italia one, but only need 9 for the Mexico one.
Always used to pick up some packets on the way to school, 10p a pack back in 86, when the Mexico WC was going on, and one day, I opened a pack to reveal the Holy Grail of that particular album - Diego Armando Maradona. I remember everyone in school wanting to see it, to believe that it existed, and offering me swapsies for it. I declined them all, and wanted to get home to stick him in the book.
But one lad REALLY wanted it, and he said he had a carrier bag with over 1K stickers in it, and he`d give me the lot, just for Maradona.
No-one believed him, as he was a bit of a fantasist at times, but he was probably the 2nd worst for it in the school, Robert beat everyone with tales of how his Father helped design Airwolf, and how his Grandad was cryogenically frozen in the attic of his house.
Next day, this lad turns up at school, and to everyone`s amazement, he had a bag FULL of Mexico 86 stickers, which he duly handed over to me, and I game him my Maradona sticker. He was a troubled lad, and it was believed his parents bought him as many packets of stickers as he wanted, to keep him happy, and so the swap went ahead, and I had more stickers than I knew what to do with.
Never completed the album with them, and if I still had any left over, I`d make a fortune on them, they still sell well on ebay, and a complete album in good condition, will often sell for £150+. Saw a listing of 3 x unopened packets sell for £150 on ebay last year. Madness !
Came across the same lad last year, when reading about my old school, and learned he`d changed his name, and had a youtube channel. Found it, and watched one of his videos, and he talked about his youth, and how he was something of a tearaway, and often in trouble with the Police. All news to me, as he never said, and the teachers were very protective of him, due to his "troubles"
He did mention in the video, how he once robbed a Police station, when he was left alone in there, after being taken in for questioning over a burglary. That was when I realised, those stickers I got in a swap, weren`t bought for him, he bloody well nicked them !
And I`ve still never got hold of a replacement Maradona sticker, a LOT of repro ones on ebay, and people are buying up the old albums, and cutting out the stickers, and selling them as original, that you have to glue onto the page, if you want to fill in the gaps.
And the last time I saw a Maradona sticker on ebay, it sold for about £75, so I don`t think I`ll be getting one any time soon.

Had the price not jumped to at least 12p a packet by 1986?
It was 10p a packet in 1982.
And yes, I remember those clear plastic efforts. Wasn't really a fan to be fair.

Speaking of swops, Upperby School Yard, 1986. A lad needed one sticker to complete. His Mam had done the order the last 50 but miscounted and he still needed one. He offered his entire pile of swops for this one elusive sticker. Next day, another lad comes in with said need. We gathered. Lad with the elusive then ripped it up. Lad who needed burst into tears. Lad who had it then produces another of the same and hands it over. Absolute scenes…

I had the Espana '82 one which was first and Mexico '86 which I still have completed. T last sticker I needed was none other than El Cheato Diego Maradona and when a lad at school had it I must have swapped around 80 stickers for it. I swear i spent most of my paper round money on stickers rather than sweets. £5 a week for seven days a week, talk about child labour! The dream was always to buy a full box of stickers.

I'm not sure where you even could buy a full box in 1982?

Was burrows news agents somewhere near the spar? (If it’s still there). A younger me used to knock around that area as well, but there was a spar there, and a pub.

Italia 90 was my first album. 15p a pack from Penningtons on Greystone Rd. Got Peter Shilton and Des Walker in my first pack. Still don't think I can think of moment better than when I eventually got the England "foil". Also remember a time my Nanna, god rest her soul giving me a fiver, I spent the lot on stickers, can't remember which season it was think it was the last season before PL when Leeds won. I'm pretty sure it was the full box and a few extra from the paper shop.

The Spar used to be a Co-op back in 82, although I can't remember the name of the bloke who used to run it - which is going to do my head in now. McGuffie? Or are my memories merging with old Grange Hill episodes?

I’m talking some time in the mid 00s roughly.

From the Orton Road end heading towards the field (Community Centre now, I believe).
In order you had:
The Co-op (now Spar) Butcher (great tomato sausage) Newsagent / Post Office Bakery

Have a look on ebay Mullen, those early ones can fetch a fortune, as there are serious collectors out there for them. Not sure if the packs had gone up in 86, found a single pack for sale on ebay, but no price marker on it. A bargain ! - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155433468609Think all the Panini stickers were in boxes of 50. I collect vintage Star Wars, and there was a chap some time back, who came across a BULK case of Empire Strikes Back stickers, not sure how many boxes were in there, but he sold them off, some unopened boxes, and others he opened, and split up, and sold bundles of packets, and he made an absolute fortune on them. Think he went exploring an old abandoned newsagents, and found them in the basement, so the story goes.
