The plan is to do High Street in the Summer when it's a bit drier, I have a 15-fell hike ready to go. I've just been looking at the Pikewassa (best named fell in the whole National Park) route and walk along towards Rest Dodd and do the Angletarn Pikes with that one. I may have to backtrack a bit and do The Nab also.

It's often overlooked, and every time I've been up there I've had it to myself. The Nab is a pain in the arse, can't be (legally) accessed from Martindale so the only 'authorised' route is to double back on yourself as you've mentioned.

Alternatively, cruise to Pooley Bridge and go via Arthur's Pike. A long but rewarding route back to Glenridding!

I noticed they'd put some red roofs on some buildings to the east of Beda Fell. Are they Air B&B's or summat?
Anyway I gather the road has been made private so you can't go up there unless you're on foot.

That`s a grand walk Moonie, did it a few year ago with a couple of mates, parked up at Pooley Bridge - boat to Howtown then walked back via Steel Knotts (Pikewassa), Loadpot Hill, Bonscale Pike and Arthurs Pike to Pooley Bridge. A bit of stiff pull up to Pikewassa, but once on top of Loadpot Hill it`s just about a hands in pocket stroll back to Pooley Bridge. Think I might have posted the walk on the previous site.

I don't know if it's the original building but a red roofed property was built for Kaiser Bill on a hunting trip just before WW1. I believe it might be a holiday home now.

I 'ran' the route from Pooley to Glenridding a few years ago, before my achilles went for the first time. Arthurs Pike, Bonscale Pike, Loadpot Hill, Wether Hill, High Raise, Rampsgill Head (and a diversion to Kidsty Pike), High Street, The Knott, Rest Dodd, Brock Crags, and Angle Tarn Pikes all knocked off in about 3 and a half hours. Think it clocked in at around 17-18 miles. I'd suggest allowing a little longer than that - the first boat out of Glenridding is at 09:45, taking an hour to get into Pooley Bridge. Even now, that leaves over 6 hours of daylight.

Speaking of Howtown, and Moonie might have better info on this, I haven`t been around that south - eastern side of Ullswater for a couple of years or so now, but the Howtown Hotel was always a favourite watering hole after a hillwalk in that area, the hotel was a bit like stepping back in time, but a very pleasant place all the same, but up on the hills a week or so ago and talking to a fellow walker, and he was saying the spot had shut down, which would be a bad loss to the area.

The hotel has always been closed between November and Easter. I did hear whispers that it may not open at all this year, though I believe their tearoom will still be operational. There can't be many places like the Howtown hotel, that little back bar is a real gem.

High Tove and Armboth Fell yesterday. What a pain in the arse it was with the road being shut the West side of Thirlmere due to work after a storm three years ago. (Yes it's taken then that long to get around to it). Absolute slog through swamp although I was hoping for a bit of snow up there but that was only for the high fells. On the way up.. The Helvellyn range were capped with snow The Geese are heading back North to the frozen tundra so it must be getting warmer here A huge tree had been ripped out by the wind alongside the road

Good pictures Wukkie. It's a while since I did those fells. Is the road over the dam towards Raven Crag closed to traffic?

Quick update to this - the tearoom at the Howtown Hotel will indeed be open from Easter, though I'm unsure about the small public bar at the back of the hotel (should find out about this tomorrow). The hotel itself will be available on an 'exclusive use' basis - I believe this means the only way to stay there is to book the entire hotel. The holiday cottages they own are still available. The entire complex has traditionally operated on a seasonal basis - closing it's doors at the end of BST every year, and reopening in the spring.

The bridge is barricaded off if you go in via Bridge End Farm but the small car park at the end of Thirlmere is open as you go in off the dual carriageway heading back towards Keswick. I didn't know this as I assumed it would be blocked off so parked up on the main road although the car park is now pay&display. Not many free car parks about these days.
