1-0 win for the youth team against Walsall yesterday. Good to see 2 of the under 15’s (Smith and Penney) involved coming on as subs. I think they’ve both been signed up as trainees a year in advance, which makes it more difficult and costly for the Premier League vultures to poach them. Thanks for updating us on the youth team, really useful & interesting. It's not meant to be a leading question, but if we have potential first teamers coming through why was the youth team manager pushed out? The official reason was that he didn't develop first team players.

Thanks for updating us on the youth team, really useful & interesting. It's not meant to be a leading question, but if we have potential first teamers coming through why was the youth team manager pushed out? The official reason was that he didn't develop first team players. Simpson appeared to throw both the youth team and Academy under the bus after a poor result against Barnsley in October. He criticised the Academy for poor recruitment, a comment that hasn’t aged well given the first team recruitment under Simpson. I’m also not aware of which local players we’ve missed out on, we did recruit Branthwaite, Trafford, Henderson and White who have played in the Premier League in recent weeks. The younger age groups have really promising players, even the under18 team has achieved better results than the first team with their 3 best players out on loan at Workington. The replacement for Friel is Rudd who was already coaching in the Academy which is a bit odd given Simpson said a new approach was needed. Not sure about Simpson’s mindset on this one.

Simmo said the youth set up “wasn’t respected” in some quarters due to some things that had gone on and therefore a culture change was needed.
All I could think of in that respect was that incident when Fishburn and a couple of others got bollocked for social media posts taking the piss out of some local team they were about to play, calling them fat old men or similar.
Has there been anything else along those lines?

I think that Rudd commands a lot of respect from the club and his opinions/recommendations will be listened to. Where as it probably wasn’t the case with the outgoing. I believe there is some strong talent in the u15/16 groups and this change should help nourish the young lads and hopefully give them the tools/support to push on.

The youth set up hasn’t been great for a while by all accounts, paying the academy hierarchy buttons won’t have helped and attracting Friel from Aldi was probably about the best we could have hoped for as a result. Now the club’s in a position to pay decent wages we might see an improvement.

The issue with Friel was that he was out of his depth and was drowning under the paperwork involved despite his claim that it was his area of expertise that got him the job in the first place. Was seen as somebody who couldnt make a decision to save his life and when parents escalated an issue about their son to him he invariably fudged it I.m told that the parents of the lads in the youth age group are very supportive of Rudds appointment.

Best of luck to the lads. Fitzpatrick and Hetherington impressed me when I saw them play for the Reds at Lancaster. Allen is a Tom Taiwo type player, a complete contrast to Hetherington who I didn’t think would be strong enough for NPL football but has done well. I watched Fitzpatrick not realising he was one of our youth team players, I thought he was an established NPL player as he looked very comfortable for the Reds. O’Brien is a very tall centre half who struggled on loan for the Reds but may not have stopped growing so he could be really useful in a couple of years time.

The step from youth to first team is to big, so maybe this change of giving them an extra developement year is a good thing. But as Simmo alluded to tevently its maybe time to have a reserve/U23 side. So these players and squad players get to play regular games keeping them match fit. Also allows the club to have a look at players returning from injury and traillists etc.

Shame Romeo Park has been released. Definitely the best name at the club.

Good luck to all the lads. Not a nice period and I wish them all well either staying or leaving. Hopefully this has been given proper thought with a clear strategy that will help the 4 lads close the gap to the first team, not waste another year of their young lives and won’t have a detrimental impact on the rest of the scholars game time and future development with it potentially being a larger squad.
