Arguably the most important ingredient in Simmo's recipe for success IMO. The lad goes from strength to strength, and is a perfect example of a player proving his detractors wrong. He's flourished for us at CB, and does a cracking job of unsettling the opposition when moved into midfield.

Excellent defender, awful midfielder.
I don't think he's proved anyone wrong, in fairness, his performances in midfield for over a year were utterly appalling.
There was always a view, and an opinion I often expressed, that he should play in defence or not at all. So Simpson, to his credit, simply did the obvious thing and put the round peg into the round hole.
We still have the annoying habit of pushing him into midfield when Simpson gets his tactics wrong at the start of the game, but I don't agree it's really effective. In those situations we'd be better off replacing a defender with a specialist midfielder rather than Mellish do the puppy chasing a tennis ball thing.
The more Mellish plays in defence the better he'll get, as I've always maintained, he should play there or not at all.

I don’t think it’s a question of getting tactics wrong at the start of the game, more about tactical nous to see what changes are needed in light of how a game is working out. No doubt you know better than Simmo who has only had 40 years in the professional game.

It's not a question of "knowing better", Dennis.
(You're doing a top job of ignoring my posts after your hissy fit in our Senior discussion, by the way.)
The question is whether it's better to do your homework before the game, scout the opposition and set up the team tactically to take account of / advantage of the way the opposition plays. You'd then know whether it would be appropriate to start the game with four at the back instead of five and bolster the midfield from the off instead of waiting until we're struggling?
Or is better not to worry too much about the opposition and to pick what you think is your strongest side?
Maybe there's an element of both of those approaches required, but generally I'd reckon if you're reshuffling your defence and midfield anywhere up to the start of the second half it's fair to say you've got things wrong.
As for "knowing better" that's not the point. You can be critical and recognise errors as a supporter and you're entitled to have an opinion, but would a different way work any better? Who knows?
Generally I'd prefer to see us starting with four at the back and an extra man in midfield at this level and with our squad - but would we be better off for points and higher up in the league? I have no idea, maybe we would be, maybe we wouldn't be.
As for Mellish "turning games" in midfield, I don't think he ever has. And notwithstanding that, a genuine midfielder will always have a greater influence.

The thing that impresses me most about Jon Mellish is his running action. It is so efficient it enables him maintain his energy and pace for 90 minutes. When he arrived from Gateshead he was very raw but he's worked on his football technique and has become a very useful player. He's tough, full of heart and a superb athlete.

Didn't think it was possible to like this fella more, what a man to play a game like that in such horrible circumstances.

First name on the team sheet for me. We're just not the same without him .

I bet he's horrible to play against also. No restbite whatsoever.

Every game he plays he seems to cover every blade of grass, could and prob should have had a hatrick against Barrow, but thats just being picky, heis definitely the engine of the team, long may he stay at Carlisle United.

I DO love that. I said when it was all over that it appeared to me that Mellish had picked out someone behind the goal roughly in line with the top corner and decided to hit the ball as hard as he could right in the face. Looking at that, that is exactly what he did. And then told him to **** off twice for good measure. What a man.
